International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2019

Yesterday (New Zealand Time) was an International Holocaust Remembrance Day – every year fall on January 27.

Did you know it is not about the Jews people who died during the Holocaust? Did you know the history or the story called “The Final Solution” or the T4 programme (Tiergartenstrasse 4)?

Many disabled people and children were targeted by the Nazis during the pre-war into the World War Two. The number – around 250,000 disabled people including children and babies were killed under the Nazis regimes.

Deaf survivors managed to escape to USA, United Kingdom and other countries. They did not sign (talked about) their horror stories to their new Deaf friends until around 1980. The more scholars, researchers, historians like myself, and students of the universities started to video their stories by collecting their life experiences during the wars and to preserve their histories for the future use in educational and in the community.

In New Zealand, in the Deaf community, the Deaf people did not learn about the Deaf survivors or about the horrors during the war times. Today I am collecting and putting together for the Deaf community so they can learn from the Deaf Survivors.

Here is one of the video clips… Ingelore (Stiefel) Honigstein and her story. The clip is from YouTube and Ingelore’s presentation at NTID.  https://youtu.be/aXSanVhL5aQ
